ICED – Immediate cooling and Emergency Decompression

Principle Investigator: Peter Batchelor

ICED is a phase 2 randomised control trial of early systematic hypothermia followed by decompression surgery for the treatment of traumatic SCI, to determine whether the combination of hypothermia and early decompression is able to improve outcomes in patients with severe cervical spinal cord injuries.

The establishment of baseline data and trial techniques has commenced including determining barriers to early decompression and both the feasibility of early decompression and neurological assessment by paramedics at the scene of injury.
