Donor spotlight: Dr Peter Kingsbury

Dr Peter Kingsbury is one of our valued supporters and here are his thoughts on philanthropy.

I’m philanthropic from an educational perspective. The recipients view of the world is changed and as a result their view of themselves is hopefully changed for the better. “I come this way but once. If there is any good that I can do; then let me do it now, for I may never pass this way again!”.

I do not think I am motivated by self aggrandisement. A need for recognition, a wounded ego. I think you get to a point in your development where you give up consuming and there is a need to give something back, to make a positive difference.

It does not have to be world changing. One small step for man is enough. I’m also doing good by proxy. You rarely meet the recipients directly. You have to rely on the good sense and moral compass of those whose vision you have adopted.

I’m primarily interested in the education and mental health side of music, for music is one of the pillars of culture. It has many dialects but it is a universal language. I support Orchestra Victoria, The Flinders Quartet, Melbourne Chamber, Orchestra, Invictus Quartet, The Latrobe and Francis Orchestras, The Rotary Foundation and Polio Plus.

As Zorba the Greek said, when words fail to communicate, I dance. It is at the core of what makes us human.
